Diatomaceous Earth for Naturally Healthy Horses & Foals  

Natural diatomaceous earth aka "DE" is excellent for internal and external natural parasite control in horses and foals.   This food grade diatomaceous earth comes from fresh water lake beds, thousands of years old and is not chemically treated.  All natural diatomaceous earth references herein apply only to "food grade diatomaceous earth".

Diatomaceous earth helps protect horses and foals by providing excellent fly control.  Feeding diatomaceous earth daily lowers manure odor thereby attracting fewer flies and keeps fly larvae from developing in manure, noticeably reducing the fly population.  Food grade DE is reported to kill 75% of flies, fleas and mites that come in contact with it within 72 hours.  Diatomaceous earth is a drying agent and thus reduces odor and moisture in horse barns and stalls, again helping to reduce fly and other parasite populations. 

Food grade diatomaceous earth mixed with grains at a ratio of 2% keeps out pests better than malathion.  DE helps eliminate ants, aphids, flea beetles, fleas, earwigs, sow bugs, mites, bed bugs, etc. 

Food grade diatomaceous earth can be applied as a foliar spray, sprayed in buildings, just lightly sprinkled in pest infested areas or compost/manure piles. 

Diatomaceous earth is great for internal worming and parasite removal for everyone:  humans, horses, livestock, and pets.  Diatomaceous earth helps detox heavy metals.  Add food grade diatomaceous earth to horse waterers, it helps prevent algae from growing so quickly in the hot summer months.

We have fed food grade diatomaceous earth free choice to our 100 animal guardians (livestock and pets) and ourselves since 1996.  We put diatomaceous earth in our livestock organic grain-herb-seed mixes that are fed daily and keep it out free choice in the barns and pastures in PVC mineral feeders.  DE is fed daily in our canine and feline raw food.  We recommend feeding diatomaceous earth free choice and added to daily feed for maximum health benefits and effectiveness.

Since feeding and using food grade diatomaceous earth on our property daily, we have never needed to use chemical wormers and have been able to eliminate fly populations completely.

Frank Roper Stables, Winter Garden, FL: With horses fed approximately 5 oz. of DE mixed in the feed twice daily, the following results were observed: Stopped scours even on horses that had not responded to any other medications. Noticeable fly reduction.  Horses showed an increase in appetites. Weight gain due to better feed conversion.  Reduction in manure odor.  Elimination of any internal parasites.  Healthier appearance. 

Start foals on food grade diatomaceous earth as soon as they are eating to prevent worms and protozoan.  This gives them a nice, healthy start and will help keep them strong and healthy.

DAILY RECOMMENDED FEEDING RATES:

Kittens - 1/2 teaspoon
Cats - 1 teaspoon
Puppies - 1/2 to 1 tsp.
Dogs under 35 lbs. - 1 teaspoon
Dogs over 35 lbs. - 1 tablespoon
Dogs over 100 lbs. - 2 tablespoons
Cattle, Dairy Cows, & Hogs - 2% of dry feed ration
Chickens - 5% in feed
Goats & Sheep - 2% in grain
Horses - 1/2 to 1 cup in daily ration
Humans - 1 heaping tablespoon daily
